The smell of Durians is driving me crazy!

I never thought I would say it - but I am sick of Durian. The smell is inescapable. Rich and creamy and a fantastic taste, but there is only so much you can eat. The crop is dropping faster than we can eat it, and they are now being stockpiled in the shed so that the smell is quarantined from the house. I have tried the Durian cake recipe, but it is not a success. Freezing it does not stop the smell and every time you open the door, the smell wafts out. The BIG question - what can we do with it to preserve it???

    Hi Alison and Digby,

It is nice to hear that you have so much Durian fruits and we could hardly find any fresh ones in Melbourne.

You could do the following things:

Remove the segments and freeze them in a container. It will be less (almost none) smell. On a hot day take it out and eat as ice cream

You could make ice cream with that. Just use the same recipe as mango or any fruit ice cream.

To make Fresh cream spong fruit cake with sponge layers where the fresh cream (soft peaks) is mixed with creamy durian between layers. It is heaven. In Melbourne it is a popular choice of the fresh cream durian spong cake among Vietnamese people.

Or you could soak 1 kg of sticky rice grain for 4 hours, rinse and drain then mix with 1/2 kg of durian fresh and steam for an hour.
You could serve with coconut sauce (1 cup of coconut milk stir in 1 heap tea spoon of corn flour, 1 heap tablespoon of sugar and a pinch of salt, cook with low heat until thicken)

You could dry them up into a flat piece and eat it as dry fruit. I had some when I went to a fruit tasting farm in Darwin.

Can you send some to Melbourne I will be interested to buy some.

    Good luck.
